I Love the Quietness of the Morning

No matter how easy or hard it is to get out of bed on a particular day, I love the quietness of the morning. It’s the one time of day that feels like it belongs to me, and it’s like a little secret pocket dimension where I can breathe.

I’m an unrepentant morning person. Though, admittedly, during allergy season, allergy medicine does make it difficult to hop out of bed with any sort of pep in my step.

Mornings have always been the time of day when my brain feels most clear. I haven’t been exposed to the world yet, so my brain has energy to do things that I want to do.

I’ve talked about the morning routine for writers before, but I do want to take a second to say that my morning routine evolves with the season of life I happen to be in. To that end, the ideal morning routine is the one that works for you in the moment.

All of this is to say that I have a confession. I used to be all about morning pages, but I haven’t really done them in months. I find that they work best for me when I do them when I need them. And there are some seasons when I don’t feel they enhance my life. They’re always there for me to come back to though.

But even if I’m not doing morning pages or adhering to a strict routine, I still love the quietness of the morning.

Why I Love the Quietness of the Morning

I love the quietness of the morning for many reasons. It feels like my own little secret, and I don’t have to share it with anyone.

(I do share it with the dog, but she’s pretty chill about it. She lets me have my mornings and she naps quietly while I do what I like to do.)

If you’re not convinced that quiet mornings are the best, here are some reasons why I love them.

001: Alone time.

I need a lot of alone time. And while I do get a significant amount of alone time while my husband is at work and I’m working from home, that alone time just hits different in the morning.

Because I’m a morning person, my brain feels best in the morning. And the alone time I have in the morning can be some of my most creative time. I won’t pretend like I’m drafting novels and changing the literary paradigm every morning, but I am having some good ideas.

002: Lack of stimuli.

My brain is a sponge that takes in stuff and can’t wring it out. So as the day goes on, more and more stuff fills up my brain until I can’t really focus anymore. Sleeping is a great way to reset my brain, but I can’t really get 8 hours of sleep mid-day to clear my head, and then also get a good night’s sleep later.

In the morning, if I avoid my phone and any sort of electronic device that sends information, I can keep the stimuli away and my brain feels less full. I can get more done because there isn’t a constant barrage of noise coming at me. This makes it way easier for me to work.

003: I can hear my thoughts.

When you keep the stimuli away, you can actually hear your own thoughts. My brain sponge takes in so much, and there are times when it’s hard to tell if a thought I had was my own or someone else’s. I love the quietness of the morning because I know where my thoughts are coming from and I don’t have to dissect them to make sure.

004: It’s a fresh start.

I won’t go so far as to say I feel reborn every morning. I definitely don’t some days, and the coffee barely helps. But it is nice to know that every single day you can start over or start fresh. You can choose that morning as the starting line for whatever you’re up to, and it’s nice to erase some the past mistakes or bad ideas.

Granted, a morning isn’t going to wash away all sins, so this really only works for the small stuff. But even so, it’s nice to feel unburdened as I start the day.

005: I can focus and set intentions.

Fresh start? Check. Lack of stimuli? Check. Ability to hear my own thoughts? Oh hell yeah.

The mornings are a time when I can focus on what I truly want and set intentions. This may be as simple as setting intentions for the day in the form of a to do list. It could be something bigger. Maybe I’m thinking of my life or a project or the legacy I want to leave when I’m dead and gone.

Whatever it is, it’s easiest to think about these things in the morning.

006: I feel ahead of the game.

Okay. I know how time works and I know that if I get up early, I’m just going to go to bed early, and it’s not like I gain hours that other people don’t have if I wake up early.

Even so, have you ever completed your daily to do list by 10 AM? Do you understand how invincible I feel when I do that? It’s the best. Granted, I need a nap by noon, but it doesn’t matter. When I wake up early and tackle the things I want to do, I feel amazing, and like I know a secret that no one else does.

007: I feel more in control.

As the day drags on, I lose momentum. I get tired and my brain isn’t firing on all cylinders. The distractions multiply, and I don’t have the fresh brain feeling I woke up with.

But in the mornings, I feel more in control of my day. My brain is working in top form and I haven’t been inundated with messages yet. I can do a lot more work than I can later in the day, and getting it done early makes me feel amazing.

008: Coffee is great.

I don’t feel I need to explain this one. But for those who don’t know, the first sip of a hot cup of coffee is like taking a deep breath and feeling every muscle in your body relax.

Holding a hot mug of coffee and planning out my day is a meditative experience. I love it, and recommend it to all.

009: My agenda is still mine.

As the day progresses, I get more and more requests on my time. These may be explicit questions from loved ones asking me to do a quick thing for them, or it might be a little piece of marketing that makes me think I need to check out something. It could be an email that demands my response. It could be my stomach growling and reminding me it’s time to eat.

Whatever it is, in the morning, my time is mine to do with as I please. There’s nothing on the agenda that I did not put there, and it’s easier to tackle those to do list items while I still feel in control of what’s on that list.

010: Tarot pulls resonate more.

The morning is a magical time, but if you do a good morning tarot spread, it gets even better. My intuition is always strongest in the morning, and the symbols on the cards resonate the most. A clear head means the reading is always just a little bit more spicy than it would be otherwise.

How Do You Spend Your Mornings?

My mornings are all about me. What about you? How do you feel about the quietness of the morning? Have I convinced you to try being a morning person?
