What Is the Worst Tarot Card?
I will say that there is no such thing as a bad tarot card. Sure, some of the imagery can be scary. Some readers can be very doom and gloom with their interpretations. And some folks are just plain scared of the cards because they’ve been taught to fear them.
But that doesn’t mean the cards are bad. They are generally mass-produced pieces of card stock. In my opinion, they are less fraught than the average Hallmark card. (They tend to have less offensive poetry as well.)
Now, with all that out of the way, let’s chat about the tarot cards that some people may think are the worst.
Tarot Cards That Scare Lots of People
How many tarot cards are there, you may ask. The answer is 78, and any of them can mean anything to any person. But here are some cards that tend to stress people out the most.
001: Tarot Cards for Big Changes
The Tower is a card that signifies upheaval and sudden change. That can be incredibly stressful. Also, the image on the card is of a tower crumbling after being struck by lightning, and two people have fallen from the windows. So, it’s not really a card that makes anyone feel the warm fuzzies.
Death is a card with a scary name. There’s a death figure on a horse going through a battlefield full of bodies. The card generally means the end of an era and the beginning of something new. But death isn’t something we, in the western world, usually think of as part of a cycle so much as a final ending.
The Ten of Swords depicts someone lying face down on the ground with ten swords in their back. This card can signify an ending or a loss. Personally, I think of it as a card that reminds us that the time to keep the peace is over.
002: Tarot Cards for Money Problems
The Five of Pentacles shows two people outside of what appears to be a church in the snow. Many people think of it as a card that signals money problems. To me, it’s a card that signals a need to reframe how you feel about your financial status. So, rethink abundance and what that looks like for your real life and not Instagram, and celebrate it.
The Seven of Swords shows a man in a very weird posture holding five swords in a super precarious way. He’s always looking back at two swords on the ground and wondering if she should grab them too. This card, to me, is about not grabbing up everything just because you can. Instead, think about what you actually need, and make intentional choices from there.
003: Tarot Cards for Heartbreak or Despair
The Five of Cups shows an older woman crying and looking at three of her cups that have toppled over. Behind her, two of the cups still stand. So, it’s about acknowledging a loss and still enjoying what you have.
The Three of Swords shows a heart that’s been pierced by three swords. Many people think of this card as the heartbreak card, but I think of it as lessons from past heartbreak. You don’t have to make the same choices in love as you have in the past, and your relationships will be stronger for it.
The Nine of Swords shows someone sitting up in bed, as if they woke in the middle of the night, with their face in their hands. Nine swords sit on the wall behind them. This is a card about anxiety, inner turmoil, depression, and fear.
004: Tarot Cards for Internal Conflicts
The Devil is a card with an image of the devil on it. That doesn’t mean you’re possessed or that Satan is coming to call. Instead, it’s a card about temptation and reframing how we feel about those very human acts we engage in, even if we’ve been taught to feel shame about them.
The Hanged Man is a card that shows a man hanging upside down by an ankle. This card is about taking a moment, stepping back, and digging deep into how you feel about something. Then, you reframe that feeling because you’re at a new vantage point.
The Nine of Wands is a card that can signal some kind of trial, but mostly an internal one dealing with faith or creativity. It’s a tough battle that leaves a mark, but you come out stronger for it.
005: Tarot Cards for Strict Gender Roles
The Hierophant looks like a pope, and for many reasons, people associate this card with a very toxic sort of religious masculinity and patriarchy. However, I like to think of the card as a reminder that we are all our own spiritual guides.
The Emperor shows a very upright king figure on a throne. It can mean masculinity, but it can also mean steadfastness, authority, structure, and control. It doesn’t necessarily have to be male.
The Empress depicts a woman sitting in a field, and is often associated with fertility and pregnancy. But it can also mean abundance, nature, and creativity.
006: Tarot Cards for Not Knowing What Comes Next
The Wheel of Fortune is the wheel in the sky that keeps on turning, and it’s a card that reminds us we can’t know what comes next. It’s a frustrating card to pull, but like real life, no one knows what the future holds.
The Two and Three of Wands both depict options and someone looking out at what the possibilities may be. If you want a direct answer, you won’t get it from these cards. But they’re a great reminder that you have options, even if you don’t know which one to pick.
The Seven of Cups is a card that shows cups full of interesting things, and one that is covered. It’s a card that encourages us to look at all the options, but not to hold out for something that might not be there.
